Duck Hunting | Foolproof System to Keep Your Dog Happy

How to Keep Your Four Legged Friend Healthy

Powered by Stone Road Media

If you’ve ever gone duck hunting alongside a well-trained and good-mannered canine, you know that the experience is unmatched by anything else out there. It’s an absolute privilege to watch one of these types of disciplined and skilled dogs retrieve downed waterfowl from the chilly pond or frosty fields you’re hunting over. If you raise hunting dogs from scruffy puppies and spend the hours, days, weeks, and months training them, you’ll especially appreciate the work that is necessary to get them to that point.
But more than that, they become like one of the family – a true hunting buddy. A good hunting dog is much more than just a household pet. Maybe it’s their eternal optimism or constant grin, even when things aren’t going your way and you occasionally miss a duck or two (hey, it happens). You just can’t help but feel the same contagious excitement for being out there. Once you’ve hunted with your four legged friend and things click, you know it could never be the same without them perched beside you in the swamp or flooded timber.

Making Your Own Luck │ The Magic of the Jerk Rig System

The Hard Core Snap Back Jerk Rig│ Hold the Upper Hand This Fall

The difference between a successful hunt and going home empty handed boils down to two things; being in the right place at the right time and tricking the eyeballs of the waterfowl that you are after. As most duck hunters know, being in the right place at the right is simply a product of good scouting. Being able to fool ducks and geese really comes down to realistic waterfowl decoys, with realistic set up and movement.
Hard core magnum mallard decoys can help any waterfowl hunter provide an extremely realistic decoy spread. These decoys provide a sense of realism that is unmatched by any other decoy on the market. They are extremely lightweight, and provide motion in your spread with even the slightest breeze, and we all know how important that is! These duck decoys have a durable construction, and will hold up against all the wear and tear that even the most dedicated and Hard Core waterfowl hunters can dish out during the course of a duck season.

Too much of a good thing │ When to pull the spinner?

When to use a spinning wing decoy│ Be more effective on late season ducks

Powered by Stone Road Media
There is absolutely no doubt that motion or spinning wing decoys have revolutionized the way we chase waterfowl. If you have hunted waterfowl long enough, then you may recall the day leading up to the introduction of these fine hunting accessories, and what it was like the very first time you utilized a spinning wing decoy. For many, these decoys became an absolute necessity that we wouldn’t go duck hunting without.
Hard Core Brands Duck HuntingSince the introduction of the spinning wing decoy, many waterfowl have fallen victim to its charm and realism, providing many happy and successful trips afield for countless waterfowl hunters across country. While we never hit the water without at least one, if not an arsenal of spinning wing decoys, sometimes too much of a good thing can prove to be hindrance rather helping, especially when trying to fool late season waterfowl.
Later in the waterfowl season, ducks and geese become extremely wary, as anyone who has hunted waterfowl can tell you. Towards the tail end of the season, these birds of seen it all and heard it all. When situations like these happen, you sometimes have to cut loose of the tactics and methods that have proven effective during the previous weeks and not be afraid to go against the grain. With the popularity of spinning wing decoys growing, more waterfowl are exposed to these decoys during the course of the waterfowl season, and there is no doubt that they can be as effective on the last day of the duck season as they were on the first. However, by the end of the waterfowl season, many of the ducks that you are hunting, especially if you are hunting public ground, will be associating a loud “BOOM!” with sight of those spinning wing decoys.

Every hunter knows just how important good camouflage is, and year in and year outRealtree Camo has made the difference between success and failure for many hunters across the country. For those of us with the passion to chase waterfowl, concealment is the name of the game.
The Right Camo for the Job | Hard Core BrandsWaterfowl, much like many game species have amazing eyesight and can pick off even the most seasoned hunter if they are not concealed to the max. It takes time, patience, skill, and most importantly the proper equipment to truly be successful. Being able to fool a wide-eyed mallard duck or Canada goose can be incredibly difficult even in the most advantageous conditions. Investing in versatile gear with best camo pattern available can help you put more meat on the table, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
If you have enjoyed duck hunting or goose hunting even for a short while, you have surely come to realize the importance of concealment. Many waterfowl hunters are extremely diligent when it comes to camouflaging their blinds and boats, but sometimes fall short on personal concealment. Here at Hard Core, we believe in checking all the boxes and leaving nothing to chance. We will never hit the woods or the water with a versatile Realtree camo pattern like Max-5 covering everything from our hats to boots.

Waterfowl Identification | Tips for the Upcoming Season

Tips to Improve Your Waterfowl Species ID

Powered by Stone Road Media
Imagine a beautiful, crisp fall morning. The air is quiet, and you can see your reflection in the mirrored surface of the lake you’re perched on. Suddenly, you hear the sound of whistling wings above your head, approaching your decoys fast. Are you confident that you’ll be able to quickly identify what species of waterfowl is overhead in the dim light of dawn? Or is there a little voice of doubt in the back of your head? Shoot or don’t shoot?!
Goose Decoy | Hard Core BrandsHaving good waterfowl identification skills is obviously important to make sure you don’t exceed your bag limits. But it’s also just a skill that you should work to develop further each year. If you call yourself a hard core duck hunter (or any hunter, for that matter), you should work to master your craft over time and learn as much about your game animal as possible. That’s what ethical hunting and being hard core is all about. You respect the animal enough to make good hunting decisions. Plus, knowing your ducks from a distance is just plain fun – it’s an enjoyable hobby to sit in your duck boat and just identify ducks, to say nothing about hunting them! Now let’s dive in (forgive the pun) to the juicy tips and techniques.

It’s Time! │ The 2015 Waterfowl Season Is Here

The 2015 Waterfowl Season Primer

Powered by Stone Road Media

While some unseasonable warm weather are currently gripping some of the Midwest bringing above average temperatures, high humidity, and soon heavy rains it won’t be long until the winds will change. It’s time for our 2015 – 16 waterfowl primer.
For our 2015 season primer we will start by looking at the current waterfowl populations and breeding activity and what that means for duck hunting and goose hunting opportunities this fall. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services recently released the results of their breeding bird’s surveys and despite continued habitat loss in the high plains either due to dry conditions or habitat conversion, waterfowl numbers remain high and are similar to last year’s numbers. This year’s count show the breeding bird numbers at 49.5 million breeding birds which is extremely exciting if you love to pull the trigger of waterfowl as much as we do!

Get in and Get Out | Techniques for Long Term Success

Geese? │ Get in and Get out!

If you were to ask any seasoned waterfowl hunter what the keys to a successful hunt are, you would hear a wide range of comments from decoy placement to location and calling toconcealment. If you were to ask those same waterfowl hunters what it would take to enjoy consistent waterfowl action at their favorite hunting spot for an entire waterfowl season, we would bet the answer would be unanimous, get in and get out!
Duck Hunting | Hard Core BrandsWhen it comes to duck hunting, goose hunting and waterfowl management in general there are two very distinct categories to consider: habitat management and hunter management. The habitat management aspect of waterfowl hunting is fairly self-explanatory. Waterfowl hunters work all season long to stimulate the seed producing moist soil plants that provide the necessary food source for waterfowl during the majority of the year, as well as stimulating invertebrates through water level management and even planting someannual grains like corn, beans or milo. These factors of duck hunting and goose hunting are what most hunters focus on and think about during the summer, and with good reason. Many hunter spend a lot time and money into ensuring that the table is set come November, however, surprisingly fewer practice the other factor, hunter management.

Big Water Ducks │ Tips for Success

Powered by Stone Road Media
They’re fast, they typically travel in large flocks, and they can be in and out of the hole in a matter of seconds! While most waterfowl hunters are memorized by the sight of mallard ducks locked up and committed to the Hard Core Duck Decoys, they may be missing an incredible opportunity. To fully take advantage of your waterfowl season, you sometimes have to be willing to trade the shallow water marsh for the deep water, and get to chase some diver ducks this fall. Here are a few things to consider that can help you be successful this fall.
Hard Core BrandsAs all Hard Core watefowlers know, in order to be successful you have to be willing to “grind it out” and put in the work it takes to put yourself in the best position to succeed. This holds true for Diver ducks. Diver ducks are waterfowl that forage in deep water habitats, by “diving” for their food, in contrast to dabbling or tipping ducks that forage in shallow water habitats.

Big Water Ducks Hard Core BrandsIf we have said it once, we have said it a thousand times, if you are going to be successful when duck hunting then you have to fool their eyes first. When duck hunting or goose hunting, concealment is the name of the game. All too often waterfowl hunters will spend a large amount of time getting the Hard Core decoys just right, and try to fool those birds with a marginal blind setup. No matter how many times you try to get by with a marginal concealment, you will never put as many birds on the stringer as you would if you had taken the time to first properly hide.

Goose Hunting | Hard Core Brands
In the world of waterfowl and waterfowl hunting, early season goose hunting holds a special place in many Hard Core waterfowl hunters’ hearts. Early season goose hunting not only helps to usher in the beginning of the fall waterfowl season in most areas, but liberal bag limits and unpressured geese can really help keep the action intense. Goose hunting during the early season can help build the confidence of even the most novice goose callers, as the lack of pressure and abundance of young geese can make for an exciting hunt. Regardless of the lack of pressure and young family groups, geese are still waterfowl, and just as easy as a stellar hunt can happen early season goose hunting can also burn you fast.

Duck Calls │ Selecting a call that fits you

Selecting the right duck calls │ picking the proper style

Powered by Stone Road Media
Choose a duck call that fits you
In the world of duck hunting, duck calls are king. Selecting the right duck call may seem like an easy decision, however, it can prove to be more challenging than you might think. Duck calls come in a wide range of shapes, sizes and styles. There are calls for open water hunting, timber hunting, cutting calls, short barrel calls, and the list goes one. While it is accurate to say that different calls fit different situations, it is important to select a call that fits you.

Selecting a duck call that fits you is truly a personal decision. There is a lot that goes into it. First and probably the most obvious, is the fit and the feel. Most duck hunters will keep a duck call in their duck call in the hand for the majority of the time there are in the field, so it is very important that the call or style of call you choose is one that it most very comfortable. You know you have stumbled upon the right call when it seems to almost disappear in your hand, and you forget you are even holding it. You truly want the call to become an extension of your arm.

Louisiana holds a special place in my heart! Having been born and raised in Louisiana’s woods and waters, it’s always nice to be able to come home to the place where my love for the outdoors took root. One thing that was a staple for me when I was growing up was deer hunting.  As I grew older and was able to hunt on my own I then discovered the treasure of hunting waterfowl in the timbers and flooded sloughs of the Mississippi River bottoms, which is home to some the finest deer and waterfowl hunting in the world!  Those are just two of the reasons why Louisiana is known as “The Sportsmans Paradise.”  That’s exactly where Team Hardcore finds themselves this week, HOME!

Arizona Elk Show | Hunt presented Hard Core

HUNT OF A LIFETIME

By: Kevin Meacham

Arizona is known for being the home to trophy elk and it usually takes many years of applying to draw a tag. This past season Michael Waddell surprised us when he told us he had 2 Elk tags for the Navajo Nation in Arizona, and we would be going there to hunt and film an episode for Hunt presented HARDCORE.
After we hunted with the Navajo Kids for 3 days we would start our hunt with Ron and Tom Yellowhorse for our chance at an of a lifetime. Chris Ashley and myself were the lucky 2 guys with the tags, but just to be here on this hunt was a treat. Our plan was to hunt together as a team and call for each other as we have done so many times, and Chris was to hunt first with his Hoyt. I would help call and bring along my rifle just in case we spotted a bull that we couldn’t get into bow range.

Show 7 | Navajo Nation Youth Mule Deer Hunt

“An opportunity to give back”

By: Cody Kelley

Powered by Stone Road Media

This season we were offered an opportunity of a lifetime. We had the opportunity to go and be a part of a youth event that the Navajo Game and Fish puts on every year for the Navajo Nation. They take about 20 Navajo kids each year and pair them up with a mentor and allow them to be apart of a mule deer hunt at the end of September each year. It’s much more than just going on a deer hunt for these kids. The Arizona Game and Fish and Navajo Game and Fish do such a great job working with these kids months in advance to begin preparing them for such a special weekend. They begin working in advance with the kids on shooting rifles, as well as, teaching them hunter safety classes.
This event is the true definition of a group of people and volunteers that jump at the opportunity to give back. The kids in today’s society are more important than ever to reach them at a young age and teach them the passion of hunting that makes all of us hunters who we are today. The group of volunteers that work this event truly understand this and work so hard to give these kids an opportunity that they may not have without the understanding of how important it is to get kids outdoors. Many hunters, myself included, often times take for granted growing up in a hunting family and having the opportunities that we grow up having in the outdoors. There are so many kids that may would fall in love with hunting, if they ever had the opportunity to go.

Waterfowl Hunting | Hard Core BrandsMake no mistake about it, here at Hard Core we live and breathe waterfowl and waterfowl hunting. It’s in our blood, it’s what we do and it’s what makes us who we are. It has helped define us, helped guide in ways that we never even realized until after the fact. Yeah, I guess you could say that waterfowl hunting is our lives.
The most interesting thing about waterfowl hunting, regardless of whether your interest is chasing ducks or geese, it is amazing just how similar waterfowlers as a group are. That is certainly not to say that there will not be those rare instances where you encounter someone whose waterfowl hunting “style” doesn’t necessary mesh with yours, but all in all you can bet that those folks are just as passionate about waterfowl hunting as you are.

Summer Fishing | Hard Core BrandsOne of the saddest days in a waterfowl hunter’s life has to be the end of the duck hunting season. There is no filling the void that the last day of the duck hunting season brings, that is of course until the opening day rolls back again! Of course, with the spring come the thoughts of turkey season. Gobbles continue to fill our dreams until opening day finally gets here. For several weeks we have forgotten the empty void that the closure of the waterfowl season has left us with, and temporarily filled it the strutting long beards, and 3 ½” magnums. Eventually, much like waterfowl season the last day of turkey season comes and goes. Well, then what? Well, as we have said many times before, you simply grab another gear and keep on trucking!

The New Mexico Elk show was the show that we cut our teeth with Hardcore. The best way to explain the overall trip is one word, rushed. On August 12th, 2014, myself, Kevin Meacham, Chris Ashley, and Keith Burgess made a life changing decision to depart from Primos Hunting and began our new adventure with Michael Waddell and Bone Collector Productions. The years spent at Primos provided us with memories that will live with us forever, but the hunting industry is the same as all other jobs when it comes down to working hard to better yourself daily and making decisions that provide opportunity for you as an individual, as well as, your family. The new show Hunt-Presented Hardcore did just this for us as a group of 4 guys. It provided us the opportunity to team up with Bone Collector and provide the viewers with a TV show format that they have been asking to see.

The Hard Core Team Conquer Turkey Season | Cody Kelley

The Fight is on in Alabama

Powered by Stone Road Media

This years Alabama Trip took place around Opelika, Alabama with Robert Dudley and the Dudley Family. The Dudley Family has owned and operated one of the largest logging operations in the Southeast for several generations. We had the privledge to meet Robert at the NWTF convention in Nashville, TN prior to 2015 Turkey season. We began doing exactly what everybody does while at the NWTF Convention, we talked turkey. It didn’t take long to figure out that Robert and his family shared the same passion for turkey hunting that we did. After a short amount of time the invite to hunt with Robert was put on the table, and we were all in.
This years trip to Alabama was one that we seemed to have nailed the perfect dates. Gobblers go through several different stages throughout the season, but my personal favorite is when they are establishing the pecking order and fighting for their women. That is the exact stage they were in when we arrived in Alabama April 23rd, 2015.

Often times we do our best as hard core sportsmen to stay on top of the current trends and techniques to help us be successful. While it is always important to continue to learn and improve your approach to the sport of hunting, many times all that is needed is to sit back and reflect upon the hunts of the previous season. You might be amazed at what you didn’t know you knew!

This year was an absolute banner spring that spanned across two States and had both the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. We experienced all that Mother Nature had to offer, from warm conditions to unseasonably cool conditions and of course, intense rainfall. We experienced call shy turkeys, and turkeys that came in on a string. Despite some of the challenges, we still managed to pull the trigger on multiple gobblers, and managed to learn a lot along the way.

However, hard core hunters know that developing their property into a turkey hunter’s paradise means first making it optimal for turkey broods. After all, if your land doesn’t have enough food and cover for hens to raise poults this summer, why should you expect great turkey hunting next year?

While shooting a big fat green head never gets old, it is really hard to be a group of early season mallards working the Hard Core duck decoys in a moist soil marsh. Many waterfowl hunters have heard the term “moist soil”, but do not quite understand what it exactly is, and why these habitats are important to waterfowl. In this article we will discuss the topics of moist soil management and how proper actions can help you have great duck hunting this fall.
Hard Core Early Season Duck Hunting | Hard Core BrandsMoist soil is a term that really describes a specific suite of early successional and perennial plants that result from specific variations or changes in water levels within shallow marshes or pools. The timing of these variations, along with the duration, can play a large role in terms species of plants established in these areas. In most intensively managed areas, the goal is manage these areas in such a way as to establish seed producing, wildlife (especially waterfowl) friendly species.

If there is one thing that most of us waterfowl hunters have been guilty of from time to time, it would be neglecting to think about our most precious and sacred resource during the “off season.” The fact is, without proper habitat, habitat management, and conservation; we would be unable to enjoy chasing goose hunting every fall. The time for getting this done is now. The work that is put in during the summer to hold waterfowl, the better the goose hunting will be this fall.

As hard core waterfowl hunters, you know the importance of getting on the best duck hunting spots. Your success rate can be exponentially increased if you are able to locate and get to where the birds want to be. Your success rate continues to increase if you are able to effectively reach the best duck hunting spots while the competition cannot, through a little stealth and concealment. A good waterfowl layout boat can be the key to a good day in the marsh.
Duck Hunting Hard Core
In duck hunting, there is a wide array of gear and equipment on the market, which often makes us better waterfowl hunters – like Hard Core duck decoys. If you are a fan of duck hunting backwater sloughs, moist soil marshes or shallow areas such as flooded crop fields then a waterfowl layout boat is something you should consider this fall. Also referred to as a poke boat or sneak boat, waterfowl layout boats are designed specifically for duck and goose hunting, and can greatly increase your success this fall.
